As a senior member of Orion’s staff, the Managing Editor will be expected to actively help steward an institutional culture that is grounded in collaboration, transparency, enthusiasm for others’ ideas, and generosity of spirit.

The Managing Editor will set and manage the annual production calendar; refine, create, and coordinate systems for moving and tracking content through the editorial process; manage production deadlines; oversee proofreading and fact-checking; oversee publication of Orion’s digital editions and the digital archive; and provide regular production updates.

The Managing Editor will also be responsible for author contracts; generating payment requests for the bookkeeper; liaising with the designer, printer, and circulation manager; managing relationships with subcontractors; managing the master contributor database; and providing support for non-editorial organizational communications as necessary. In addition to MS Word and Excel, s/he must be proficient in InDesign, Google Docs, Dropbox, and Basecamp.

Although the primary emphasis of this position is on managing production and process, the Managing Editor will acquire and edit 1-2 feature articles per issue, and acquire content for Orion’s departments. S/he will also help review and evaluate submissions to the magazine.

Desired qualifications:

The Managing Editor will share our belief in the power of good writing and will have a solid grounding in environmental thinking. S/he will have enthusiasm for both print and digital media, will take direction easily, and will also have the ability to independently take projects from start to finish. S/he will have a deep interest in Orion’s core subjects and style.

The successful candidate will have at least five years’ experience as an editor for a general-interest or literary magazine, including a proven track record with acquisition. S/he will be highly organized, flexible, and especially skilled at convening conversations that prioritizes others’ ideas and creative contributions, and will take joy in helping others succeed.

The Managing Editor should personify exemplary managerial competencies such as self-observation, self-management, interpersonal awareness, attention to communication, personal credibility, empowerment of others, facilitating collaboration, and providing motivational support.

Salary/pay: $42,000-$48,000/year. Orion offers an extremely generous benefits package, including health, dental, and life insurance; 12 paid holidays per year; and generous vacation time.
