Duties:

As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries), you will:

  • Lead a small group of lower graded technicians in gathering field data, and provide necessary training in techniques and procedures.
  • Monitor salmon runs using fish weirs, Didson Sonar, and digital video equipment
  • Conduct abundance estimates of resident fish species
  • Document fish movement using radio telemetry
  • Sample water quality
  • Perform fish habitat inventory

Technicians will perform field work at various locations throughout the state, including remote areas in the Alaskan bush. Travel to field camps is primarily by small aircraft or boat.

Desired qualifications:

For the GS-06 grade level, the applicant must have at least 1 year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-05 grade level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience are: aquatic ecology, fisheries science, fisheries management, and/or field-based fisheries or other aquatic ecological research, responsibility for field camp logistics; participating in the development of work plans and schedules; leading groups of technicians and providing the necessary training in techniques and procedures; research activity or control program work in support of fisheries programs.

OR

Have 6 months of graduate level education (9 semester/13 quarter hours) in a position-related field of biological sciences.

OR

Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education, as described above. To compute this, first determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement and then determine your specialized experience as a percentage; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100% to qualify.

For the GS-07 grade level the applicant must have at least 1year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-06 grade level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience are: providing technical support to professional biologists in completing all phases of a biological study or project of significant scope and duration including: project planning, logistical arrangements, field work, correlation and analysis of data completion of reports or other documents related to the project; research activity or control program work in support of fisheries programs.

OR

Have 1 year of graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours) in a position-related field of biological sciences.

OR

Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education as described above. To compute this, first determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement and then determine your specialized experience as a percentage; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100% to qualify.

Salary/pay: $38,893.00 to $56,182.00 / Per Year
