The primary purpose of this position is to perform wildland firefighting work. These positions perform work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, and hazardous fuels reduction. May also perform duties in other fuels related, or ecosystem restoration projects. These projects may include work such as road and trail maintenance, habitat manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance. May assist in forestry/range research efforts; in the marketing of forest/range resources; or in the scientific management, protection, and development of forest/range resources, as well as performing other duties as assigned.

This position serves as an assistant to the supervisory engine module leader on a Type 6 engine module. The position is responsible for the direct supervision of three or more firefighters in the absence of the supervisory module leader. The incumbent will direct others in operation and use of engine equipment and provides on-the-job instruction to other crew members. This position performs and leads crew in fire prevention, preparedness, wildland fire suppression, and prescribed fire activities.

This position also provides support to the district and forest prescribed fire program, and to the district mechanical fuel treatment program. The position may prepare service contracts for fuel treatment and may serve as a contract officer representative on such contracts.
