Wyoming Migration Program Director, The Nature Conservancy

Wyoming

Position Title: Wyoming Migration Program Director

Organization: The Nature Conservancy

Location: Western Wyoming

Organization Overview: Founded in 1951, the Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, TNC creates innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. The organization tackles climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at unprecedented scale, and providing food and water sustainably. TNC’s commitment to diversity includes the recognition that their conservation mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of diverse people of all genders, backgrounds, beliefs and culture. Recruiting and mentoring staff to create an inclusive organization that reflects a global character is a priority for the organization and they encourage applicants from all cultures, races, colors, religions, sexes, national or regional origins, ages, disability status, sexual orientations, gender identities, military or veteran status or other status protected by law. Working in 72 countries, including all 50 United States, TNC uses a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners.

Position Overview: The Nature Conservancy seeks a Migration Program Director to join a dynamic team in Wyoming. Wyoming is home to some of the most intact and undisturbed lands in the country, with abundant wildlife – including numerous long-distance big game migrations, clean air, and expansive vistas; yet a variety of forms of development and a changing climate threaten the biodiversity and human well-being in the state. TNC is looking for a creative and hands-on professional to design and implement solutions to conserving the important big game migration corridors that crisscross Wyoming and enable migrating ungulates to thrive alongside human interests and land-use considerations. The successful candidate will lead implementation of TNC’s existing migration initiatives and develop new solutions that support Wyoming’s big game populations. They will build strategic partnerships and identify ways to advance best conservation practices in Wyoming. Other essential functions include guiding the development of new science, managing contracts and agreements, communicating with diverse audiences, convening policy conversations, writing proposals and engaging with funders and donors.

TNC is looking for a proven leader capable of building effective partnerships with public agencies and private organizations; implementing science-based conservation on the ground; policy advocacy; and playing a major role in communicating and fundraising for the Conservancy’s work.

Duties:

  • Developing key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices.
  • Identifying opportunities to scale successful collaborative and technical solutions and best practices regionally and throughout the Conservancy.
  • Advancing policy solutions that achieve long-term conservation goals.
  • Negotiating complex agreements, sometimes in political environments.
  • Ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
  • Building cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
  • Maintaining engagement with former and current TNC trustees.
  • Identifying innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs.
  • Supervising migration program staff, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Frequently making independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
  • Experience negotiating.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
  • Politically savvy.

Salary: $61,400 to $78,400 depending on location and experience
