Organization Overview: The Boulder Climbing Community (BCC) is a local climbing organization dedicated to stewarding the climbing environment. They envision a world where climbers are stewards of the land, not merely users. Where land managers, climbers, and the community work together to care for the climbing landscape along the Front Range and occasionally beyond.

Position Overview: The Stewardship Director will direct the following programs: Trail Program, Anchor Replacement, Human Waste, Raptor Monitoring, and Graffiti Removal of the Boulder Climbing Community working closely with the Executive Director, Marketing Director, and other staff and volunteers. This role will supervise the BCC’s Trail Program and oversee all aspects of the trail program. In addition this role oversees the Anchor Replacement Program (ARP), including its staff and volunteers.

This role writes and manages the grants for all programs.

This position is critical to the organization’s fundraising capacity: program outcomes are the reason donors support the BCC. This role is a part of the team facilitating strategic partnerships and implementing targeted campaigns and events.

This position requires someone who espouses the core values of the BCC outlined below, and represents the BCC positively in all community interactions. This role will frequently represent the Boulder Climbing Community and candidates must be comfortable being the “face” of the organization at events, meetings, among other opportunities. .

Duties: 

  • Work with the Executive Director and to identify priorities and needs of the position.
  • Solicit and prepare Trail Program projects by maintaining communications with land management agencies, planning/coordinating/attending site visits and providing needed documentation: proposals, design concepts, workflow plans, background documentation and project reports.
  • Hire and supervise: trail crew, trail crew coordinator(s) and bolt coordinator.
  • Create budgets, schedules, and effective tracking and monitoring documents for all programs.
  • Write clear and concise reports for all stewardship programs.
  • Write grants to support all programs within a threshold of +/-5% of budgeted targets.
  • Coordinate with Outreach and Volunteer Manager to organize program related volunteers to increase the impacts of their stewardship programs.
  • Maintain metrics for all programs.
  • Manage the volunteer portion of Salesforce.
  • Attend BCC staff meetings and events central to the role, including the Soiree.

The Specifics:

Stewardship Programs:

  • Provide volunteer coordination for all the stewardship programs: trails, bolts, wag bags, eagles, and graffitti programs.
  • Attend regional and local meetings related to climbing stewardship when the Executive Director is unavailable.
  • Develop ARP curriculum and train volunteers.
  • Administer and track ARP Grant Program.

Staff Management:

  • Supervise and evaluate the trail crew and trail coordinators, and the anchor replacement coordinator.
  • Seek out key volunteers and train volunteers to ensure the goals of the programs are met.

Fundraising:

  • Support fundraising campaigns throughout the year related to programs to fulfill fundraising goals.
  • Solicit corporate sponsorships for stewardship events and initiatives.
  • Identify and apply for key grants.
  • Tabling at key stewardship events: National Public Lands Day, National Trails Day, and others.

Qualifications:

  • 4-year degree in a related field.
  • 4+ years experience in related fields.
  • Advanced trail work experience and skills, with an emphasis on intensive stonework projects, stone quarrying, highline rigging, and material management.
  • Advanced experience training, supervising and managing others.
  • Moderate to advanced experience managing work sites and/or projects.
  • Capability of documenting project metrics via field notes and photos.
  • Proven ability to manage projects and budgets up to $200,000.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and to stand for 4 hours at a time.
  • Attend bimonthly board meetings, monthly staff meetings, and weekly meetings with the Executive Director.
  • Excellent written communication.
  • Knowledge of Leave No Trace and sustainable land management practices.
  • Effective self-starter and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to learn and master new skills on a continual basis.

Salary/Pay: $55,000-$70,000 depending on experience.
