Organization Overview: Congress tasked the BLM with a mandate of managing public lands for a variety of uses such as energy development, livestock grazing, recreation, and timber harvesting while ensuring natural, cultural, and historic resources are maintained for present and future use. The Bureau of Land Management’s mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
Position Overview: BLM in Wyoming is hiring for summer positions and would be thrilled to have University of Wyoming current students and graduates apply. Open positions for Summer 2024 include:
- Wildlife Technicians
- Technicians will perform surveys for various wildlife species: raptors, migratory birds, Greater sage-grouse, and amphibians.
- Range Technicians
- Technicians help the rangeland management program with monitoring land health conditions, checking grazing compliance, and repairing fences and riparian exclosures.

- Botany Technicians
- The monitoring crew uses current rangeland ecology monitoring protocols measure the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Selected crew members will already know or have the ability to learn to identify dozens of native and non-native rangeland plants, and have the opportunity to leverage knowledge related to soils, hydrology, and wildlife biology to help bring science-driven solutions to our public lands. This position requires the ability to walk intermediate distances over uneven terrain and to drive on unimproved roads using four wheel drive vehicles. The crew spends 80% or more of their time in the field in and around Wyoming’s famous Red Desert, an absolutely beautiful area ranging from forested mountains to sagebrush steppe.
- Recreation Technicians
- Technicians help with outdoor education programs and volunteering days, and also help maintain campgrounds and trails, and collect fees.
