Organization Overview: Since 1973, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has served as the state’s regulatory agency charged with protecting, conserving and enhancing Wyoming’s land, air and water for the benefit of current and future generations.

Their scientists and professional staff contribute to the quality of life in Wyoming through a combination of monitoring, permitting, inspection, enforcement, restoration and remediation activities that support responsible stewardship of the state’s natural resources.

Position Overview:  You will be among numerous professionals working to protect, conserve, and enhance the quality of Wyoming’s water resources for current and future generations. You will collaborate with peers within the WDEQ’s Watershed Protection Program and their federal, state and local partners to monitor and assess a diverse makeup of surface waters throughout northern Wyoming, within high-elevation mountains, prairies and intermontane basins. In addition to the core work of surface water quality monitoring and assessment, there is flexibility for inter-program collaboration on development of water quality standards and Total Maximum Daily Loads, as well as training and other professional growth opportunities.

Duties: 

  • Design sampling and analysis plans for evaluating attainment of surface water quality standards.
  • Collect chemical, invertebrate, algae, fish, and physical habitat data from streams and lakes using standardized data collection and quality assurance procedures.
  • Consistently and objectively apply water quality standards and evidence-based reasoning to evaluate chemical, biological, and physical condition of surface waters
  • Write technical reports and data summaries.
  • Respond to public water quality inquiries and complaints and recommend solutions or enforcement actions when appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with stakeholders having diverse perspectives on water quality issues.
  • Coordinate within and across programs to support strategic goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s (typically in The Sciences)
  • 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
OR
  • 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Day and overnight travel required, most often during summer and fall
  • Walk in varied terrain over moderate distances
  • Wade in flowing water over uneven, soft, or slippery streambeds
  • Bend or kneel while collecting samples and measurements
  • Carry up to 40 pounds over moderate distances
  • Work outdoors in variable weather conditions
  • Operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle on un-improved roads

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with a combination of education and experience demonstrating ability to develop and implement surface water quality evaluations; analyze and interpret chemical, biological, and physical surface water quality data; and write technical reports with objective and scientifically-defensible conclusions.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Understand concepts of aquatic ecology, hydrology, chemistry, limnology, fluvial geomorphology and data quality assurance
  • Effective written and verbal communicator of technical subject matter
  • Strong computer skills including GIS
  • Able to effectively work independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated, and have a strong work ethic
  • Skills in managing adversarial situations, resolving conflict, and consensus-building

Salary/Pay: $5,147.99 – $5,719.99 Monthly
