Position Overview: This position is located on a Forest Service unit, and is responsible for planning, developing, administering and executing work plans and projects for wilderness, recreation, trails, and special uses activities.

Duties:

  • Duties listed are at the full performance level, GS-9.
  • Provide program input into a natural resources management planning processes for work plans on wilderness, trails and special uses activities.
  • Participate in the development of long and short-range plans of wilderness, trails, special uses and recreation resources for agency guidelines and direction.
  • Develop work plans for usage of wilderness areas, construction and maintenance of trails, parking areas, trailhead facilities, campgrounds, and other developed recreation sites.
  • Analyze and interpret data to formulate recommendations to achieve management objectives and policies.
  • Initiate contact with the public to educate visitors and protect resources.
  • Communicate agency management practices, rules, and regulations to the public for education on wilderness, trails, special uses and recreation activities.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of natural resource education programs for the local community

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:

For the GS-7 Level:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include one or more of the following: assisting in developing plans and objectives to maintain, rehabilitate, construct or reconstruct recreation facilities, sites, trails or wilderness areas; assisting in issuing and ensuring compliance for permits in land-use, recreation and non-recreation use; assisting in inspecting recreation areas for public use and safety; documents and reports trail and wilderness data to address performance standards; assists with managing volunteer and partner agreements through successful field projects; assisting in recommending work plans for recreation sites to generate visitor interest.

one full year of graduate level education

OR

an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience

OR

Superior Academic Achievement The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

For the GS-9 Level:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include two or more: participated in the drafting of annual work action plans for carrying out recreation management decisions related to natural resources; worked with employees of various grade levels to develop potential recreational sites or areas for additional recreation use and planned development; assisted with other natural resource management activities by analyzing the impact of those sources on the recreation program; participated in assessing documentation of environmental impacts on social, economic, environmental, and other resources; administered various types of special use authorizations.

OR

masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related;

OR

an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Salary/Pay: $46,696 – $74,250 per year
