Position Title: WY Native Plant Specialist

Position Overview: The WY Native Plant Scientist works closely with science staff and external partners to improve native plant and seed availability in Wyoming. They will help agency partners prioritize native plant species for cultivation, identify populations for seed collection, lead research to establish best practices for native seed production, and create relevant reports and data records to share with seed growers and other interested parties.

The WY Native Plant Scientist gathers and synthesizes data in order to create conservation activities and implementation plans. They conduct trials, record data and write project reports. They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

As part of the TNC Wyoming business unit and part of TNC’s ecosystem-wide Sagebrush Sea Program, the WY Native Plant Scientist will contribute to goals of accelerating the pace of restoration and proactive management to maintain a diverse and functional sagebrush ecosystem that supports Wyoming’s wildlife and people. The WY Native Plant Scientist will work with natural resource managers in multiple agencies and will be part of a team of TNC scientists.

This is a 2-year grant-funded, full-time position, with the potential to extend.

Duties: 

  • Work collaboratively with partners to prioritize, collect, process and store native plant seeds.
  • Design and implement lab trials testing seed dormancy break protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with partners to identify capacity and knowledge gaps in seed production.
  • Design field experiments and analyze data to establish best practices in native seed production.
  • Write scientific reports summarizing methods, results and conclusions as well as make recommendations for future work.
  • Write grant reports and support the writing of grant proposals.
  • Support science staff with other work including seed technology experiments, and invasive annual grass surveys
  • May require managing volunteers and interns.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing data and writing project reports.
  • Experience working with or cultivating native plant materials.

Salary: $46,800-52,000
