Organization Overview: High Desert Helitack is a Bureau of Land Management Helicopter Crew based out of Rawlins, Wyoming

Position Overview: High Desert Helitack is currently seeking applicants for the 2024 fire season and are looking for motivated individuals with a strong work ethic who have a desire to work and perform in the high-paced environment of wildland fire aviation. The career seasonal staff generally work from early April through mid to late October while the seasonal staff generally starts mid-May and then works through early October.  For all staff, most years there are opportunities to work later through fire assignments to the southeast and local fuels reduction projects. The crew utilizes a Type 3 helicopter (AS-350 B3e) for the duration of the contract.

Available positions include:

Duties:

  • Serves as a senior wildland firefighter and member of one of the following crews: fuels, handcrew, hotshot, engine, helitack or wildland fire module.
  • Performs wildland fire suppression/management/control functions.
  • Performs fireline activities such as line construction, hose layout, operations of pumps and accessories, and mop-up operations.
  • Participates in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices and methods of fire suppression.
  • Gathers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.
  • Participates in fuels management projects and prescribed fires.
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.
  • May serve as a situational leader on wildland fires.

Qualifications:

  • In order to be rated as qualified for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirement – please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
    • Previous experience with wildland firefighting and tools are required based on the position level the candidate is applying for.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
  • You must also pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.
