Organization Overview: Student Educational Opportunity (SEO) is a unique department within Academic Affairs hosting both campus-based programs and statewide outreach programs dedicated to promoting college access and college success among Wyoming’s socioeconomically disadvantaged students and families.
SEO programs are funded by the U. S. Department of Education and allow the university to provide free services to students who are underrepresented in postsecondary education and graduate school including students who are first generation college students, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities and from limited-income families.
Programs, staff, and services can be found at the University of Wyoming, on the Wind River Indian Reservation, and statewide, serving eligible students in 7th – 12th grade as well as UW undergraduates.
Position Overview: UW’s McNair Scholars Program is a long-standing undergraduate research and graduate preparation program on campus funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The University of Wyoming is currently recruiting undergraduate students to complete the 2023-2024 cohort. The program specifically supports students who aspire to earn a graduate degree and who are from backgrounds underrepresented in post-baccalaureate education including individuals who are first-generation college students from limited income backgrounds or students from underrepresented groups.
McNair Scholars receive a wide range of benefits. They earn a stipend to complete a credit-bearing summer research internship under the direction of faculty and graduate student mentors, funding to travel to research conferences and to visit graduate programs, free academic writing classes, access to workshops on topics related to graduate school, and free tutoring and individualized support services. Most students in our program go on to a fully funded graduate program the fall following their graduation.
Eligibility:
- UW undergraduate students with a 3.0 GPA or higher and the desire to attend graduate school.
- First generation college students who are from limited-income backgrounds OR students from racial or ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate education including: African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.
- Students must be juniors or on track to attain junior status (60-credit hours completed) by the close of spring 2024.
- Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
