Position Title: Communications Specialist, Science and Digital Media

Organization: The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation

Location: Flexible in the United States, This position is 100% remote. Candidates must have a home office location suitable for work purposes, with good internet access, and must be located in a city or state location approved by Xerces as their permanent work location.

Organization Overview: The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is an international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats. As a science-based organization, they both conduct their own research and rely upon the most up-to-date information to guide conservation work. Their key program areas are: pollinator conservation, endangered species conservation, and reducing pesticide use and impacts.

Position Overview: The Specialist will develop creative and engaging content for the Xerces Society’s digital channels that galvanizes support for invertebrate conservation. They seek applicants with excellent writing, editing, and visual content skills (i.e. photography, videography, and/or graphic design). This Specialist will develop original content as well as solicit and edit staff content for Xerces social media channels, e-newsletters, the Xerces blog, and other communications products as assigned, ensuring a high degree of accuracy and consistent voice and brand. The Specialist will also contribute to customer relations through prompt, supportive and scientifically accurate responses to public inquiries. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of making complex scientific topics accessible and captivating for general audiences, as well as experience with digital marketing and best practices.

Duties:

  • Produce original written content for Xerces Society digital platforms, including social media (Meta Business, Twitter,      LinkedIn), websites (e.g. Drupal, WordPress), email marketing (e.g. Constant Contact), newsletters, and other products as assigned.
  • Conceptualize and produce visual content for digital platforms, including layout, photography, videography, and/or graphic design.
  • Solicit, schedule, and edit written and visual content contributions from Xerces staff.
  • Proofread and fact-check copy for brand, tone, audience, consistency and accuracy.
  • Respond to public inquiries and comments in a timely and accurate manner, maintaining social media standards.
  • Conduct research to identify key messages and opportunities that can advance the organization’s mission and objectives.
  • Contribute to evaluation and measurement of communication outcomes and impact.
  • Provide input on the development of Xerces content and digital communications strategy.
  • Contribute to staff training and development in communications, including compliance with Xerces policies and procedures.

Start Date: February 2024

Salary/Pay: $29.90 /hour, approximately 62,192 annualized
