Position Title: Natural Resources Analyst (GIS Coordinator/Geologic Map Editor)
Organization: Wyoming State Geological Survey
Location: Laramie, WY
Organization Overview: Since 1933, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) has performed the important and critical function of interpreting Wyoming’s complex geology. WSGS scientists work to gain a better understanding of Earth’s history, geologic wonders, potential hazards, and natural resources such as water, minerals, and energy.
Position Overview: We are seeking someone who can bring GIS and geology and/or cartographic experience to our agency. This is a critical position for the WSGS to meet its mission and statutory responsibilities. This position works with all departments to produce and publish products and services.

- Oversees internal GIS-related resources
- Develops and implements GIS templates, guidelines, standards, and SOPs
- Responsible for geologic map editing, as well as creating and implementing cartographic guidelines and templates
- Creates and manages selected interactive online maps
- Creates metadata and assures geologic databases are GeMS compliant
- Develops data file structure, including geodatabase design and organization, and metadata creation
- Keeps the WSGS current with GIS software programs, especially ESRI
- Works to make WSGS products, including legacy maps, compatible with latest software programs
- Creates and edits map figures in WSGS publications
- Serves on the website team.
Qualifications:
Required:
Education: Bachelor’s (typically in The Sciences)
Experience: 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
OR
Education & Experience Substitution: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
Preferences:
Preference may be given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in earth science, geography, environmental science, computer science, or GIS, plus four years or more experience; experience may be achieved through relevant work or advanced degrees in related fields.
Preference may also be given to candidates with a demonstrated background in GIS, experience with GeMS, strong writing skills, and a general understanding of geology.
- GIS experience, specifically with ESRI software
- Geology background and/or cartography experience
- GeMS standards
- Geologic mapping principles and methods
Salary/Pay: $5,147.99 – $5,719.99 Monthly
