Position Title:  Conservation and Stewardship Intern

Location: Cheyenne, WY and Remote

Position Overview:  The Wyoming Stock Growers Land Trust (WSGLT) and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources are partnering to recruit a University of Wyoming student to serve as the 2024 Conservation and Stewardship Intern. The Intern will gain in-depth knowledge and experience in land conservation while furthering WSGLT’s mission of conserving Wyoming’s working agricultural landscapes. The Intern will work with Dr. Drew Bennett in the Haub School during part of the Spring and Fall semesters and with WSGLT’s stewardship team to monitor 119 conservation easements across 297,000+ acres of Wyoming ranchlands during the summer.

Duties: 

Primary Responsibilities with Haub School:

  • Research conservation and stewardship programs in Wyoming and the Western U.S.
  • Develop outreach and communication materials related to conservation and stewardship of private lands for diverse audiences
  • Maintain a weekly log throughout the duration of the internship

Primary Responsibilities with WSGLT:

  • Complete annual monitoring of conserved properties
    • Work with the WSGLT stewardship team to monitor existing conservation easements (this requires frequent overnight travel from May-August)
    • Understand conserved property requirements and ensure that the current condition of each property is fully documented
    • Complete follow-up paperwork and maintain files documenting the annual monitoring visit
  • Appropriately elevate any landowner reserved rights requests, suspected violations, or other stewardship related issues to the Conservation and Stewardship team, including the Conservation Director
  • Assist in drafting Baseline Documentation Reports for new conservation easement projects
    • Assess and document the current agricultural, ecological, and cultural conditions of new projects
  • Maintain compliance with the WSGLT’s policies and alignment with the Land Trust Alliance’s Standards and Practices
  • On occasion, assist with social media content from the field and writing articles for various publications
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in agriculture, natural resource management, land conservation, or a related field
  • Ability to travel 40-50% of the time from May to August; much of this is overnight travel
  • MS office and ArcGIS experience preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work under deadlines while producing accurate work
  • Ability to work independently in remote areas and in potentially hazardous terrain
  • Communicate professionally with landowners and other organizations
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Good physical condition; ability to use an ATV necessary
  • Exit interview with the Land Trust and Dr. Bennett

Start/End Dates: This position will begin part-time with the Haub School during the spring semester at 5-10 hours a week. It is anticipated that the candidate will continue this position as a full-time employee averaging 40 hours weekly from May through August. Upon mutual agreement, the position may continue part-time during Fall 2024.

Salary/Pay: Depends on Experience
