Position Title: Consent-Based Siting of Spent Nuclear Fuel Graduate Research Assistant

Organization: Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Wyoming

Position Overview: We are seeking a master’s level Graduate Research Assistant to join the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources. This graduate student will assist with a U.S. Department of Energy supported project that involves community engagement to inform consent-based siting processes for spent nuclear fuel. Dr. Weston Eaton and Professor Temple Stoellinger will co-advise this position. This Wyoming team is part of the research consortium.

We seek a graduate student with experience or interest in supporting a range of outreach and community engagement methods. This student will support the team in assessing practical elements of engaging with prospective communities including convening, communicating with, facilitating interactive activities, and assessing those engagement activities. The student will also support the development of research outputs associated with this effort including academic paper development and presentations. This position is funded for one year and an opportunity to extend with additional projects in year two.

This is an in-person, on-campus position that will include some regional travel to coordinate community engagement. Primary tasks include coordination of multiple modes of outreach and engagement, designing and implementing assessments and compiling reports and related products that both assess and support the engagement process.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Interest in community engagement and outreach on issues of public concern
  • Highly organized, responsible, and self-starting
  • Interest in the tasks listed above
  • Interest in an interdisciplinary field of study
  • Strong speaking and writing proficiencies
  • Available to work on this project for one year

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with interdisciplinary scholarship related to the environment, natural resources, or energy
  • Experience or interest in social and environmental justice
  • Experience conducting undergraduate research
  • Strong interest in conducting research at the graduate level

Start Date: August 22, 2024 (9 months)

Salary/Pay: $12,825 stipend; health insurance ($2,855) + tuition and fees ($7,183). Total Package: $22,862 GRA Salary for another year guaranteed with satisfactory progress, summer funding not included
