Organization Overview: Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) is a North American nonprofit organization with chapters throughout Canada and the United States. Position Overview: They are seeking an individual with the talent, passion and initiative to promote BHA’s mission and to collaborate with state and federal land management agencies on organization and implementation of their fish and wildlife habitat conservation work. The Habitat Stewardship Coordinator will work directly with Bureau of Land Management & BHA staff to carry out fence removal and modification work in high priority areas identified and approved by BLM staff. This individual will also work with volunteers and partner organizations, to advance meaningful fish and wildlife habitat conservation and restoration work on BLM land by improving habitat permeability through fence removals and modifications. This national BHA staff member will work under supervision of the BHA Stewardship Manager.

The ideal candidate will work with a high level of autonomy and be flexible and organized in a fast-paced work environment. They will be able to quickly analyze and solve problems, collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, prepare professional reports that accurately document activities, adhere to standards of confidentiality and communicate effectively. The successful candidate will represent BHA with integrity and champion the mission and values in all facets of their work.

Duties: 

• Work in coordination with BHA staff and chapter leaders to inspire, mobilize and support volunteers to assist with the implementation of partner-funded public land stewardship projects.
• Organize and recruit volunteers and partners to participate in field days.
• Promote the people and places impacted through stewardship work with traditional media outreach strategies and through BHA’s digital media platforms.
• Oversee management of stewardship grant deliverables, budget and reporting.
• Deliver stewardship volunteer training.
• Oversee management of stewardship contractors, as needed.
• Ensure volunteer safety and compliance with BHA and BLM policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties assigned by supervisory staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Preferably a hunter and/or angler.
• Willing to work flexible hours and travel across the region up to 50% of the time, including periodic extended travel to project sites.
• Previous experience with a public land management agency and/or with nonprofit volunteer management is strongly preferred.
• Previous experience in fence construction and modification is preferred
• Proven understanding of state and federal land management agency planning and project management processes.
• Previous experience managing grant funding for stewardship work preferred.
• Previous experience managing contracts preferred but not required.
• Previous experience with NEPA encouraged but not required.
• Must conduct work with integrity, good humor and a focus on developing partnerships, building trust and maintaining strong professional relationships.
• B.S. in natural resources or related experience preferred.
• Minimum of three years relevant experience required.
• Must demonstrate the ability to work with and interact with sportsmen and women and have a general knowledge of current and historical conservation issues.
• Must be an innovative and resourceful self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
• Must believe in and demonstrate a commitment to BHA’s work and mission (please address in cover letter).
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds and have a valid driver’s license.

Salary/Pay: $50,000
