Organization Overview: Program in the Environment (PitE) is a jointly managed program between the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the School of Environment and Sustainability, that serves 300 majors and 300 minors. PitE is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that allows students to explore environmental and sustainability issues facing society and develop skills to address and adapt to the associated challenges. The curriculum blends foundational knowledge, skills, and practices from natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and culture, planning, art, and design. PitE’s students are highly engaged both within and outside the classroom and participate in a wide array of co-curricular activities including student groups, internships, and community engagement activities.
Position Overview: The Program in the Environment (PitE) at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a full-time lecturer position to contribute to their broad liberal arts curriculum through both teaching and student community building and programming. This position is 67% instructional and 33% administrative (administering student programs, curriculum planning for programmatic goals, and mentoring students).
As a successful candidate, you will demonstrate experience developing and teaching a range of environmentally-relevant, engaging courses and a demonstrated commitment to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive community both inside and outside the classroom. You will also have experience in academic program management and development.
This is a Lecturer III appointment, which is a non-tenure track position and subject to the terms of the LEO bargaining agreement.
Duties:
Description of Instructional and Administrative Needs
In addition to teaching four courses per year, you will have the opportunity to help shape the overall undergraduate experience of their students by working collaboratively with PitE leadership to develop and administer student programs, inform curriculum planning for programmatic goals, and mentor students aligned with programmatic initiatives.
All courses are expected to be taught in person on the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus unless there is a compelling pedagogical reason for remote or hybrid instruction.
Desired Teaching/ Content Expertise
The PitE faculty represent a wide range of disciplinary expertise, with many having joint appointments with other units on the University of Michigan campus. Candidates from a broad range of expertise will be considered, although specific areas of need include environmental justice, sustainable business and organizations, public health, environmental humanities, energy and climate, and environmental law and policy.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A PhD in natural resources, environment and/or another sustainability-related discipline or closely related field OR Master’s degree with at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching and promoting and participating in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring.
- Demonstrated history of maintaining good working relationships and effective channels of communication in academic settings.
- Access to relevant professional networks
- Experience and excitement for teaching professional skills including: self-awareness, team dynamics, leadership, project management, technical/scientific writing.
- Experience with building and maintaining client relationships that can help bring about on-the-ground impact
