The Institute is dedicated to the promotion of science through field studies programs, conservation practices, and public outreach.
Position Overview: The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management is recruiting 1 Range Tech Intern for the Casper Field Office, located in Casper, WY. Under the direction of the Bureau of Land Management resource specialists, the selected candidate will assist rangeland monitoring,Range Improvement Projects, invasive species monitoring and treatment, and LandHealth Assessments.
This position is primarily field based and will require moderate and occasionally strenuous physical exertion, including hiking with 20to 30 pounds of gear up steep slopes and/or uneven terrain. Field work would involve driving a BLM provided vehicle to field sites each day. Common environmental hazards associated with field work could include heat, inclement weather, and strong winds.
Duties:
- Performing vegetation survey protocols and inventories.
- Inventorying and assisting with treatment of invasive species.
- Inventorying Range Improvement Projects.
- Inspecting livestock grazing allotments for compliance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or course work towards a degree in Natural Resources, or related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and field experience.
- Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of botany and invasive species monitoring;
- Familiarity with native and invasive plants of Wyoming;
- Ability to safely navigate to field sites using maps/compass and handheld GPS devices;
- High level of proficiency leading field work in dynamic field settings;
- Excellent organizational skills;
- Experience with data entry and QA/QC procedures;· Reliable, team-player with strong leadership and communication skills;
- Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license;
Start/End Dates: May 2024, 16 week appointment
Salary/Pay: $18.75/hr
