Founded in 1998 at the University of Nevada, GBI advances applied research to support science-based adaptive management of public lands. The Institute is dedicated to the promotion of science through field studies programs, conservation practices, and public outreach.

Position Overview:The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management is recruiting 2 Recreation Technicians for the Casper Field Office, located in Casper, WY. Under the direction of the BLM, the selected candidate will support the Outdoor Recreation and Resources programs of the Casper Field Office.

This position is primarily field based and will require moderate to strenuous physical exertion, may include carrying up to 50 lbs of tools and equipment to work sites across uneven terrain and/or steep slopes, and operating from a drift boat on the river. Required driving of up to 2 hours one way to reach sites. Work includes operating in busy campgrounds and along roadsides. During fieldwork the position is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals.

Duties: 

  • Recreation site management and maintenance.
  • Trail monitoring and maintenance.
  • Visitation monitoring through data from traffic counters, customer survey, visitor logs and direct monitoring.
  • Assist with Special Recreation Permit monitoring primarily through river compliance checks.
  • Field Data Collection for Recreation Planning.
  • Enhance recreation experiences by providing information and publications to the public in the field.
  • Public Lands sign inventory and placement.

Qualifications:

  • Earned or currently earning Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation Planning, or related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and field experience;
  • Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of Outdoor Recreation and Visitor Services;
  • Ability to safely navigate to field sites using maps/compass and handheld GPS devices;
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills;
  • Experience with data collection;
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively and in a team setting;
  • Physically fit to work outdoors, carry up to 50 pounds of personal and/or field equipment, and withstand the rigors of a mountainous and/or high plains environment during the summer season.
  • Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; and
  • Must be able to drive a four-wheel drive vehicle on dirt roads.

Start/End Dates: May 2024, 16 week appointment

Salary/Pay: $18.75/hr
