Position Title: Wildlife Technician

Organization: Wyoming Game and Fish

Location: Cheyenne, WY

Position Overview: The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Wildlife Technician in Laramie, WY. This position assists Department personnel in wildlife damage control, wildlife damage claim investigations, wildlife conflict resolution, wildlife data collection, wildlife disease surveillance, and sports person and public relations in accordance with Department policy.   Assists with fostering a productive working relationship with agricultural producers and other constituents. Perform routine maintenance of Department facilities, equipment, and grounds.

Duties:

  • Assist game wardens in limiting depredation by big game, game birds and trophy game animals to crops and livestock.
  • Routinely communicates with landowners experiencing wildlife damage, ensuring relationships are maintained.
  • Assist regional personnel with wildlife conflict situations in urban and rural settings.
  • Humanely euthanize sick and injured wildlife.
  • Proficiency in the safe use of handguns, shotguns, rifles, and pyrotechnical devices.
  • Live trap and relocate black bears, mountain lions, and other wildlife.
  • Communicate with homeowners, landowners, and other interested parties and provide information regarding wildlife conflict situations.
  • Assist with the collection of biological data during wildlife and habitat surveys. Assist the Department with aerial wildlife surveys, both from fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other Department personnel, landowners, and sportspersons.
  • Provide Department outreach information and assistance to the public.
  • Collect lymph nodes from harvested deer, elk, and moose, for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance efforts.
  • Collect and record other harvest information (i.e., species, age and sex of harvested animals).
  • Maintain facilities and equipment as directed.
  • Communicate effectively with landowners, sports person, and Department personnel.
  • Assist regional personnel with coverage during hunting season, particularly on Department administered lands.
  • Assist with wildlife research efforts and data management, as needed.
  • Provide Department outreach information and assistance to the public.

Qualifications:

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • Preference will be given to those with a four-year college degree in wildlife management, range management, or other natural resource field. Other related training and experience will be evaluated.
  • Preference will be given to those individuals with field experience, specifically safely operating vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, 4 wheel drive trucks, and trailers), horseback, and on foot in remote locations and under extreme weather conditions.
  • Preference will be given to those individuals with experience in firearm proficiency and the lethal removal of wildlife.
    **Agency requires that the successful applicant possess a valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Skill in the safe use of handguns, shotguns, rifles, and pyrotechnical devices.
  • Skill in interpersonal communications with employees, landowners, and the general public.
  • Ability to obtain, record and manage data.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to be self-directed.
  • Knowledge of wildlife management concepts, principles, and practices. 
  • Well-developed communication skills (written and oral).
  • Knowledge of general outdoor skills and hunting skills with applicable experiences.
  • Skill in the use of GPS and reading maps.
  • Ability to positively work with and facilitate relationships with the ranching and hunting communities and other interested individuals as a team.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision and limited communication while in the field.
  • Ability to make decisions under difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to use small power and non-power hand tools, fencing building experience, light mechanical skills, and light construction experience is preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate 4-wheel drive pickup, ATV and snowmobile in various terrain and road conditions.  Experience in vehicle maintenance/repair in field situations.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. 
  • Excellent physical condition and ability to perform under adverse and various terrain and weather conditions.
  • Ability to work outside and perform under adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain often during long periods.
  • Ability to walk in rough, uneven terrain with unstable footing.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, early mornings, late evenings and at night. 
  • Will be required to work alone in the field in a remote setting and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Travel and overnight stays may be required

Salary/Pay:$24.11/Hr
