Position Title: Visiting Faculty of Geology

Position Overview: The Visiting Professor will teach mainly entry-level general education courses, where recruitment of majors is a priority, such as Physical Geology with labs, Environmental Geology, Oceanography, and theme-based courses such as Living with the Great Lakes.

Duties:

  • The Geology Department invites applicants for a full-time, non-tenure-track Visiting faculty position, starting in the 2024-2025 academic year.  We seek a creative and dynamic educator to teach introductory geology courses as part of the general education program.  We require at least an M.S. in Geosciences with demonstrated teaching experience.
  • The teaching load will be mainly introductory geology courses, some with labs and/or large lectures (e.g. GEO 100, 103, 105, 111). Many of these courses involve field trips or field experiences.  There may be opportunities to teach courses related to the disciplinary strengths of the candidate. The teaching load is typically 12-15 credits per semester. Individuals will be appointed for one academic year on a full time basis. This may be renewed annually for a total of three (3) consecutive years.
  • We are particularly interested in enthusiastic and innovative educators who can implement effective pedagogy and contribute new activities and field experiences to those already developed by department faculty.  We will encourage the successful candidate to participate in professional activities with students and in the West Michigan community.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
  • Creativity and flexibility;
  • MS or PhD in the geosciences or related fields is required.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Candidate with a Ph.D. or ABD in the geosciences with some demonstrated teaching and research experience are preferred.

Salary/Pay: $50,000
