Position Title: Interpretive Ranger Big Horn District

Organization: Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources

Location: Thermopolis, WY

Position Overview: This position creates and implements interpretation for Big Horn District sites, designs and executes educational programs, administers the volunteer program, and organizes special events.  These duties achieve the department’s goals by providing enjoyable and interpretive experiences for visitors while also preserving our cultural and natural resources so the unit can be sustained at the highest possible level.  The Big Horn District consists of the following staffed sites:  Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site, Buffalo Bill State Park, Hot Springs State Park, and Boysen State Park – plus several unstaffed satellite sites. The position will be located in either Hot Springs State Park (Thermopolis) or Buffalo Bill State Park (Cody).

Duties:

  • Interpretation for Big Horn District Sites: Create and implement novel and impactful interpretive programs, activities, special events, and outreach programs for all demographics of visitors.

  • Run social media channels for district sites including, but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

  • Train volunteers and staff in our guided tour program. 

  • Obtain and maintain NAI Certified Interpretive Guide status, implementing techniques from the training.

  • Work with people of all backgrounds and walks of life including children, family groups, and adult audiences as well as historically underrepresented groups.

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing; establish and maintain working relationships with employees and the public.

  • Network with other museums and cultural organizations to collaborate on interpretation, outreach, and special events. Connect with patrons by working at the front desk, introducing them to the specific site and the others who make up the unit, answering all questions, and listening to feedback.

  • Special Events: Coordinate and/or assist with special events and submit required paperwork. Organize volunteers to help run the events. Promote events via the website, social media platforms, newspapers, and radio.

  • Interpretive Personnel: Assist with interviewing prospective applicants for open interpretive positions and making hiring recommendations. Discuss and resolve problems regarding processes and work methods, as presented by subordinate workers. Provide site-related training to staff and volunteers.  

  • Fiscal Management for Big Horn District Interpretation: Follow budget parameters; monitor unit budgets carefully so as not to exceed spending authority. Coordinate with volunteer friend group fundraising activities and provide direction on how funds can best benefit the unit. Research different avenues of funding and apply for grants when appropriate.  Assist in the design and distribution of brochures and signage.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of best practices for interpretive or educational programming.

  • Knowledge in digital media: creating graphics, engaging with visitors, and posting on social media.

  • Knowledge of state personnel rules and regulations.

  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and agency procedures on a variety of issues.

  • Knowledge of how to operate and use cleaning and grounds maintenance supplies.

  • Ability to fiscally manage site budget.

  • Ability to supervise unit personnel and positively interact with public and agency staff.

Salary/Pay: $27.13 Hourly
