Position Title: Colorado Headwaters Ecological Spectroscopy Study (CHESS) Technician

Organization: Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory 

Location: Crested Butte, CO

Position Overview: RMBL is hiring 2-3 seasonal technicians to support the NASA-funded Colorado Headwaters Ecological Spectroscopy Study (CHESS) campaign, collecting field measurements and samples that will be linked to hyperspectral remote sensing data from an airborne platform. CHESS aims to understand how plant communities and their ecosystem functions are adapting to long-term drought and climate change.

Duties:

• Performing field activities for the CHESS project, including plant identification and sample collection, as well as collection of data from handheld instruments such as GPS system, field spectrometers, and climate sensors.

• Assist with non-field activities for CHESS such as laboratory processing of field samples, data entry, data curation and analysis.

• Participate in other research support activities as needed.

Qualifications:

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team with diverse strengths and levels of experience.

• Attention to detail in performing complex tasks in challenging field conditions.

• Computer skills and the ability to learn and operate new computer programs. Previous experience with GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS), and scientific programming (R/Python) preferred.

The ability to physically navigate remote field sites, and a rustic worksite, including uneven terrain, steep hills, gravel trails, deep snow, and other hazards, including in bad weather.

• The ability to lift and move up to 50lbs.

• A clean driving record and the ability to safely operate vehicles. Previous experience operating 4WD vehicles preferred.

Start/End Dates: Approximately June 1 to July 31, 2025.

Salary/Pay:  $20 – $22 depending on experience
