Position Title: Forest Field Technician

Organization: University of Wyoming – Germain Lab

Location: Grand Teton National Park, WY

Position Overview: The Furniss-Germain lab at the University of Wyoming is seeking 4-6 field crew members to support field-based forest research in Grand Teton National Park, WY. The crew will work closely with 5-6 graduate students to survey, map, and measure trees, establishing permanent monitoring sites in the park. Applicants will gain experience with forest mensuration, plant identification, and land survey techniques. There will be opportunities for advancement for candidates interested in continuing work at the University of Wyoming in Fall 2025. Group food and all cooking gear provided – cooking teams rotate 1-2 days/week. Group campsites provided in Grand Teton NP.

Duties:

  • full time work week is 40 hrs (M–Th; 7:00 am – 5:30 pm; 4 on and 3 off)
  • work in teams of 4 technicians/graduate students (12 personnel total in camp)
  • hike 4+ miles daily in Grand Teton National Park
  • GPS permanent forest plot locations
  • map, measure, and identify trees in plots
  • assess tree health and mortality
  • opportunities to assist graduate students with tree cores, understory plant surveys, mycorrhizal sampling, and more

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

(1) experience camping and hiking in mountainous terrain; (2) able to hike at least 4 miles daily carrying field gear and supplies in a variety of weather conditions; (3) excellent communication and interpersonal skills for team-based work and a large group living arrangement.

Preferred Qualifications:

(1) professional or academic experience in Forestry, Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field; (2) prior field work experience collecting research-grade data.

Start/End Dates: June 1 – August 22, 2025

Salary/Pay: Starts at $15/hr
