Position Title: Research Technician

Location: Mt Rushmore, SD
Position Overview:
The position is based at Mt. Rushmore National Monument and requires on-site work.
Under the supervision of Dr. Derrick Taff and a research assistant, the Research Technician will collect and analyze recycling and waste data to evaluate visitor practices and support sustainable waste management initiatives. This 7-week position offers an opportunity to contribute to environmental stewardship at an iconic national landmark.
Duties:
- Record and maintain accurate data on recycling and waste streams.
- Engage with visitors and staff to observe and document recycling behaviors.
- Collaborate with the team to analyze findings and generate recommendations for improved waste diversion.
Qualifications:
- Personable and comfortable interacting with people face to face and virtually.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Experience:
- Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
- Leave No Trace training.
Salary/Pay: $15.57 an hour, 40 hours per week. Housing at the School of Mines is provided (housing is a two-room unit that will be shared with another Research Technician).
