Overview: World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a climate communications intern to support the Alliances for Climate Action initiative, under the WWF-US’ Climate team. 

The Alliances for Climate Action (ACA) is a global network of domestic multi-sector alliances committed to driving climate action and supporting the delivery and enhancement of their countries’ climate goals. ACA connects cities, states, the private sector, investors, universities and civil society at the domestic level so that they can work with each other and with their national governments to accelerate the transition to a just net zero future. Starting with We Are Still In in June 2017, these alliances are in Argentina, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Viet Nam, with plans to expand to key geographies between now and 2021. ACA is supported by 7 global partners including WWF (Global Coordinator), AVINA Foundation, CDP, C40, CAN-International, The Climate Group, and the We Mean Business Coalition.

Under the supervision of the Senior Program Officer, US and International Climate Cooperation, the intern will largely support the programmatic communication needs for the ACA Global Coordination team. The intern will work closely with the ACA Global Coordination team to refine and implement the 2020-2021 communications plan for the initiative. The communications intern will draft content for the ACA website and facilitate content-based upgrades to the current site. The position will also draft communication products for key international events and moments leading up to COP26 in November 2021.The position also performs desk research on specific climate-related topics, support the coordination with ACA alliances, global partners, WWF country offices and others as needed. 

Duties:

  • Support refinement and implementation of the ACA 2020-2021 communications plan
  • Produce written content for the ACA website (alliancesforclimateaction.org), including blogs, press releases, climate-focused news, and case studies
  • Manage the ACA Twitter account (@ACAClimate), including creating tweets and amplifying tweets of ACA global and national partners
  • Conduct quick desk research on existing databases that track and analyze climate action and climate policies (“Nationally Determined Contributions” and “Long-Term Strategies”) aligned with a just net zero transition by 2050
  • Coordinate and schedule calls with the 6 national alliances, global partners and WWF country offices, and track notes and next steps from the calls
  • Provide logistical support to the ACA Global Coordination team and coordinate with the 6 alliances during key international climate events and moments leading up to COP26,  including the UNFCCC Race to Zero Dialogues, The 5-year Paris Anniversary, UN Climate Ambition Summit, Regional Climate Weeks, and new alliance launches.

Qualifications:

  • Experience distilling complex topics into compelling narratives for public audiences 
  • Knowledge and experience with basic Content Management Systems like Drupal and WordPress
  • Familiarity with social media tools including Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook
  • Solid experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Mailchimp and Outlook
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and pitch in at all levels with a “can do” attitude
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with colleagues and partners from diverse backgrounds and stakeholder groups is essential
  • A commitment to the mission, goals and values of WWF
  • Preference will be given to candidates in a related field, such as cross-cultural or intercultural communications, international communications, international relations, international politics, international development and international communications for climate, energy and sustainable development  
  • This internship is accepting only currently enrolled students in a graduate degree program. This is an unpaid internship, with a strict requirement for course-credit. 
  • Professional fluency in Spanish, or any other UN official language is an added asset but not required

Salary/pay: Unpaid. For all unpaid internships, applicants must be enrolled in school and be able to obtain academic course credit from their university. Either part time or full time (24-35 hours/week).

Start and End Dates: November through April 2021 (with possibility of extension)
