Organization Overview: Better Wyoming is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization that educates, organizes, and mobilizes Wyoming residents on behalf of statewide change. Their current campaigns focus on affordable healthcare access, a livable fossil fuel-free future in Wyoming, and fair and accurate representation as the Legislature redraws voting districts.

Position Overview: Better Wyoming is hiring a community organizer to help run our statewide grassroots organizing and voter mobilization campaigns. In this position, you will work with Better Wyoming’s directors to lead issue-based advocacy campaigns and voter mobilization program. You will work with Better Wyoming’s organizing director to support and develop grassroots leaders across the state, and you will use digital advocacy tools to mobilize Wyoming residents online. The community organizer’s job revolves around people. It involves developing relationships with Wyomingites impacted by the core issues we seek to change, in addition to partner organizations and other key allies. Currently they work during normal office hours but often host trainings and events in the evening (roughly an average of one per week). Your schedule will be flexible within these parameters. Additional hours may be involved during the legislative session. Knowledge of advocacy-specific digital platforms like Hustle and EveryAction is a plus, but not necessary. You must possess the ability to learn new software and new digital skills. In addition, you must be able to integrate with the common programs the team uses, such as Google Drive and Slack. Basic website management and graphic design skills are a plus. You will be a key point of contact between Better Wyoming and the broader community. As such, you should possess a basic awareness of their core issues and the willingness to learn them in depth. These include healthcare access, a “just transition” from fossil fuel dependence, tax reform, criminal justice reform, and issues related to social justice and poverty. You don’t have to be a policy expert, but you should have a working knowledge of these issues and be able to explain to people why they matter.

Responsibilities:

  • With support from the Organizing Director, plan and facilitate trainings with volunteers on how to plan actions, recruit new leaders, tell their stories to lawmakers, and other organizing skills
  • Conduct outreach through canvassing and tabling
  • Make follow-up calls to build relationships with new contacts and motivate them to action
  • Conduct one-on-one organizing conversations to support and develop leaders
  • Help to organize public actions that pressure lawmakers and increase participation in our campaigns
  • Use Better Wyoming’s digital resources, including SMS and email, to communicate with their statewide constituents

Salary/pay: This is a full-time position. The starting salary range is $40 – 44k (DOE) plus health insurance, paid sick leave, and generous vacation, including two Fridays off per month.
