Organization Overview: The DEVELOP Program bridges the gap between NASA Earth Science information and potential users through rapid feasibility studies that apply Earth observations to environmental decision-making needs.

Position Overview: Three times a year, participants apply through a competitive application process. Those selected conduct 10-week research projects in interdisciplinary teams of 4-5 people. They work closely with DEVELOP science advisors and mentors to apply Earth observations to address real-world problems. Through this process, participants build both research and science communication skills. These skills and project experience help set them up for success in the workforce.

Duties: If selected, you will conduct a literature review on the scope, methodologies and types of NASA remote-sensing data applicable to your project. You will also partner with organizations seeking enhanced decision-making tools. To help provide these tools, you will use GIS and remote-sensing data to conduct application projects. By project’s end, your team will create a presentation, technical report, and creative communications deliverables. The program aims to build the skills needed to explain project results to a variety of audiences. DEVELOP also offers personal development activities like personality typing, team building and networking with scientists and partner organizations.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in Earth science and remote sensing
  • At least 18 years of age by the start of the term for which you are applying
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (either cumulative or most recent) from the current or most recent institution of higher learning
  • If selected for an on-site opportunity, the ability to provide personal transportation to and from the DEVELOP location
  • U.S. citizenship is required to apply to NASA/NOAA center DEVELOP locations. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply to DEVELOP regional locations. Please refer to the DEVELOP Apply Page on the NASA Applied Sciences website for DEVELOP locations able to accept non-U.S. citizens

Each applicant must also meet the below additional requirements specific to their applicant classification:

  • Currently Enrolled Student: Students currently enrolled in school (high school, community college, college, or university); open to all majors and education levels
    • U.S. Citizens:
      • Evidence of enrollment at a school (copy of unofficial transcripts)
    • Non-U.S. Citizens:
      • Evidence of enrollment at a U.S. accredited university or college located in the United States (copy of unofficial transcripts)
      • If selected – proof of approved CPT authorization approving your participation in the program for the duration of the term to which you are applying
  • Recent Graduate: Individuals who graduated with a degree (high school, Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or PhD) within the past two years; open to all majors
    • U.S. Citizens:
      • Evidence of successful completion of a degree (transcript reflecting graduation date)
    • Non-U.S. Citizens:
      • Evidence of successful completion of a degree at an accredited university or college in the United States (transcript reflecting graduation date) If selected – proof of approved OPT authorization approving your participation in the program for the duration of the term to which you are applying
  • Early Career Professional/Transitioning Career Professional: Individuals out of school for more than two years at the start of the term to which they are applying; includes individuals who are early in their career, transitioning to a new career field, or returning to the workplace after an absence
    • U.S. Citizens:
      • Evidence of successful completion of a degree (transcript reflecting graduation date)
    • Non-U.S. Citizens:
      • Evidence of successful completion of a degree at an accredited university or college in the United States (transcript reflecting graduation date)
      • If selected – proof of approved CPT or OPT authorization approving your U.S. work authorization to participate in the program for the duration of the term to which you are applying or legal permanent resident status

Start/End Dates: June 5- August 11
