Organization Overview:  The Endangered Species Coalition’s mission is to stop the human-caused extinction of the nation’s at-risk species, to protect and restore their habitats, and to guide these fragile populations along the road to recovery.

They work to safeguard and strengthen the Endangered Species Act, a law that enables every citizen to act on behalf of threatened and endangered wildlife — animals, fish, plants, and insects — and the wild places they call home. They use grassroots mobilization, education, and targeted campaigns to enable every American to participate in actions that impact the democratic political process. They are a national network of conservation, scientific, education, religious, sporting, outdoor recreation, business and community organizations — and more than 150,000 individual activists and supporters — all dedicated to protecting the nation’s disappearing wildlife and last remaining wild places.

Position Overview: The Endangered Species Coalition National Grassroots Organizer will work across ESC campaigns and with ESC staff, including Field Organizers and partners (Member Groups, Allied Voices, volunteers, donors, and others) to oversee national organizing work. This will include managing ESC’s signature organizing events and cultivating their high-level activists. The National Grassroots Organizer works to build the necessary public and political support needed to advance endangered species protections and coordinates efforts to win victories and build long-term support for imperiled wildlife.

Duties: 

Activist Training Lab (ATL): Oversee ESC’s formal training program–the Activist Training Lab (ATL). The ATL is designed to provide ongoing training for their member groups. Participants will receive training, materials, and mentoring in grassroots organizing—from developing campaign plans to talking to decision-makers, to securing media, and coordinating large-scale public events. The National Grassroots Organizer will be responsible for the implementation of this program–from the application process to graduation. This will include setting the timeline, creating more training videos for their on-demand training, and preparing additional materials.

National Wolf Campaign:The National Grassroots Organizer will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the National Wolf Campaign, including working with coalition members, formulating campaign strategies, work plans and timelines, grassroots and grass-tops organizing, hosting a bi-weekly call for activists, public education, media relations, political engagement, and fundraising.

Other Organizing Activities:

In a changing political environment National Grassroots Organizer must be adaptable to see and seize opportunities as they arise.

The National Grassroots Organizer may also need to carry out the following:

  • Organize lobby days and/or lobby lawmakers directly, learning to make a convincing case for policy goals.
  • Recruit local organizations to join a campaign and take action.
  • Build an email activist network of constituents in the district.
  • Hold news conferences with experts, coalition partners, and constituents to deliver your message.
  • Organize town hall meetings and other public events to lift constituents’ voices and hold elected leaders accountable.
  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers and activists.
  • Recruit volunteers and manage interns
  • Write campaign materials, reports, presentations, fundraising proposals, campaign plans, blog posts, and op-eds.
  • Use social media to advance campaigns
  • Write grants and grant  reports
  • This position will include travel.

Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years experience working in environmental or social justice movements, political campaigns, or connected fields to plan and implement grassroots campaigns.
  • Basic knowledge of biodiversity issues, wildlife policy, and conservation.
  • A working understanding of movement-building, strategic campaign planning, and management.
  • A knowledge of environmental justice and a commitment to developing just campaigns.
  • Excellent written communication skills. Ability to write for the media, public, and donors.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to speak to groups, media, and diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively, and effectively with the public, staff, and volunteers. Strong ability to network, build trust, and build working relationships.

Start Date: May 1, 2024

Salary/Pay: $51,000 – USD $54,000 / year
