Data Science Intern, Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc.

Laramie, WY

Position Title: Data Science Intern

Organization: Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc.

Location: Laramie, WY

Organization Overview: Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a temporary part-time data science intern. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data. Since its founding in 1990, the WEST team has shaped the foundation of what they do, and what they believe in through their core values and key principles. Their work matters to their clients, communities, and the environment. Join WEST and discover a company of passionate, committed, and highly motivated individuals.

Position Overview: WEST is seeking a candidate for a paid internship in ecological data science. This internship program is co-funded by the University of Wyoming EPSCoR Program and Western EcoSystems Technology (WEST), Inc. The goal is to increase the intern’s competitiveness for computational and data science careers in academic, government, and/or commercial settings. The internship can begin this summer and may extend into the fall depending on the project and intern availability.

This internship is a part of WY-ACT: Anticipating the Climate-Water Transition and Cascading Challenges to Socio-Environmental Systems in America’s Headwaters. There are multiple possible intern projects as WEST works with a variety of partners within the state of Wyoming on topics that relate to climate and water systems. Project selection will be determined by considering the intern’s strengths and goals along with partner needs. The intern will be supervised and mentored by a WEST data scientist, with the opportunity to interact and work with multiple additional staff members from WEST and our partners.

Interns will be employees of WEST. The number of hours worked per week can be flexible. Each internship can be as many as 300 hours; however, because interns will be employees of WEST, there may be opportunities for interested candidates to conduct additional paid work assisting WEST projects.

Qualifications: Because this position is funded in-part by a grant through the University of Wyoming, priority will be given to applicants that are current students or recent graduates (within the past 3 years) of the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college. Residents of Wyoming and members of the Wyoming workforce are encouraged to apply.
