Job Title: Predation Study Field Assistant

Type of opportunity: Field assistants will contribute to a research project evaluating seasonal patterns of wolf predation in the upper Shoshone and Greybull valleys near Cody, Wyoming. Using GPS collar data from wolves, technicians will identify GPS clusters in ArcGIS to be investigated as potential kill sites. Field techs will be responsible for checking clusters and recording data such as prey species, age, class, and condition. Field techs will work directly with a graduate student, and may also work with volunteers who will periodically assist with fieldwork.

Desired qualifications:

  • Previous experience conducting cluster searching
  • Familiarity with the study area
  • Backcountry experience in grizzly country
  • Previous experience working in small teams, and working long hours in challenging field conditions
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications
  • Experience with ArcGIS
  • A bachelor’s degree in a wildlife-related field Required Qualifications/Skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting with a positive attitude
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic about hiking into the backcountry most days
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Able to interact professionally with agency personnel, private landowners, and the interested public
  • High levels of physical fitness- applicants must able to hike long distances each day on rugged terrain
  • Capable of working safely for long hours in frequently very harsh winter conditions
  • Responsible decision-making, especially when it comes to risk assessment in the backcountry and following bear safety protocols
  • Basic First Aid/CPR and backcountry navigation skills • Valid drivers license required
  • Experience driving 4×4 vehicles

Start and end dates: 02/01/2019 – 04/01/2019

Salary/pay: approximately $1,800-$2,200/month
