Type of opportunity: The American Wind Wildlife Institute (AWWI) is offering Fellowship for an outstanding individual to learn first-hand about issues related to wind energy and wildlife interactions, and the collaborative efforts underway to solve these issues. The Fellow will have the opportunity to research interdisciplinary, cross- sector topics that are key to the success of solving wind-wildlife challenges; expand creative thinking on these topics; interface with leaders in the field; and apply insights gained toward a career in a field related to renewable energy and wildlife conservation.

This hands-on opportunity will provide the Fellow with knowledge about the practical application of science aimed at advancing conservation and renewable energy. The Fellowship will offer a number of short-term opportunities to visit and collaborate with AWWI’s wind-energy and conservation-science collaborators, which will be identified in partnership with the Fellow based on their research topic and interests. The Fellow will also explore other networking and mentorship opportunities, with the possibility of attending conferences and workshops and participating in fieldwork activities.

Duties: During the appointment, the Fellow will work closely with members of the AWWI team and collaborators to produce a research report for AWWI or journal publication on a topic that advances the goals set out in AWWI’s National Wind Wildlife Research Plan, which focus on reducing uncertainty and developing solutions to wind energy’s impacts on key wildlife species.

Applicants should review the Research Plan to understand priorities and goals and may propose any research topic that advances these goals. Possible topics could include, but are not limited to:

  • Expanding the analytic capabilities of the American Wind Wildlife Information Center (AWWIC) database.
  • Addressing the challenges of integrating technologies to minimize wildlife impacts at wind energy facilities.
  • Exploring the tradeoff between the risk to wildlife from renewable energy development and the risk to biodiversity loss owing to climate change.
  • Research Report: Working with AWWI staff and other collaborators, research and produce a report ready for publication on a key research topic
  • Engage in related AWWI Work: As relevant, work with AWWI staff on ongoing AWWI projects related to research topic focus, including participating in discussions, reviewing reports, and other related tasks
  • Career Development: Work with AWWI to develop placement, networking, and mentorship opportunities, including the possibility of attending conferences and other events

Desired qualifications:

  • We anticipate that applicants will have recently earned a graduate degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in renewable energy, biology, environmental science, or a related field
  • We prefer applicants have an academic advisor who could continue to advise and provide mentorship during the Fellowship
  • Passion for the practical application of science toward advancing conservation and/or renewable energy
  • Intent to pursue a career related to renewable energy and wildlife conservation
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills, including strong experience interacting with or developing academic literature
  • Self-starter with strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with diverse groups including AWWI team members, industry representatives, conservation practitioners, researchers, agency personnel, and consultants

Start and end dates: The Fellowship is scheduled to begin Summer/Fall 2019; the specific start date is flexible. The position is 9-12 month appointment; weekly/monthly time commitment flexible.

Salary/pay: Stipend of $45,000 with additional funds available for professional development opportunities.
