Job Title: Tribal Outreach Fellow

Organization: Archeology Southwest 

Type of opportunity: The Fellow will participate in two years of intensive training within Archaeology Southwest’s Landscape and Site Preservation Program. The Fellow will assist with planning and implementing a campaign to establish the Great Bend of the Gila National Conservation Area. The Great Bend of the Gila is the region of southwestern Arizona from Buckeye to Yuma along the Gila River.

Duties:

  • Working with Tribes to identify and support specific Tribal interests
  • Organizing Tribal visits to heritage places in the Great Bend of the Gila
  • Facilitating Tribal communications with public land managers
  • Administering online surveys, focus groups, and partnership sessions for the Great Bend of the Gila Campaign
  • Creating management plans for ancient trails preserved in the Great Bend of the Gila
  • Using social media to promote the Great Bend of the Gila Campaign
  • Assisting with outreach to local communities, public land managers, and private landowners

Qualifications: 

  • Life experience in an Indigenous community
  • Educational background (B.S. or B.A. awarded or in progress) in a relevant field (for example, archaeology, anthropology, communications, environmental studies, geography, community planning, etc.)
  • Personal commitment to heritage preservation or environmental conservation
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the Southwest
  • Communication, research, and task-management skills

Salary/pay: $46,000
