Organization Overview: The Healthy Rivers Initiative (HRI) is a strategic, stakeholder-driven program that strives to ensure the vitality of the Popo Agie River watershed by improving water quality, quantity and the biological health of the river so that it better supports domestic, agricultural, recreation, fish and wildlife uses.

HRI (a program of the Popo Agie Conservation District) seeks a half-time contract Coordinator who will organize stakeholders to build a shared community commitment to the resilience of the Popo Agie watershed. The coordinator will plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement a variety of projects and partnerships aimed at conserving and enhancing water resources.

Duties:

  • Build and sustain broad stakeholder involvement and participation in HRI
  • Develop new messaging and educational activities to consistently and effectively communicate with stakeholders and the broader community
  • Employ (and expand if necessary) the planning tools developed by HRI to build project plans that enhance water quality and quantity in the watershed
  • Work with irrigators, water users, HRI working group members, agencies, local municipalities, and others to plan, prioritize and implement water conveyance, cooperative water management and storage improvement projects, including budgets, timelines and funding
  • Develop and maintain tools to evaluate, compare and select from competing water management projects
  • Support project design and engineering and perform required compliance and permitting activities
  • Identify and cultivate both public (federal and state) and private funding sources to support HRI’s efforts
  • Plan and host periodic public education activities or outreach events
  • Work with HRI working group members to ascertain the value of irrigation district formation in the watershed
  • Work with HRI working group members to ascertain the value of HRI becoming an independent non-profit entity
  • Represent HRI at public meetings and events

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience in the areas of agriculture, irrigation and water use management/planning
  • Strong organization and communication skills, including speaking with public audiences
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and leadership
  • Functional skills in GIS mapping and data analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Based in Lander or demonstrated knowledge of the community and its watersheds
  • Experience working with a variety of private landowners, community groups and public agencies
  • Experience working in collaborative environments
