Position Title: Graduate Research Space Grant Program

Location: Laramie, WY

Organization Overview: As part of the national Space Grant Program, an offer Graduate Research Fellowships to students at the University of Wyoming is available. These fellowships are awarded to graduate students performing independent research who submit outstanding research proposals in line with National Space Grant Goals and Objectives or related to NASA’s mission goals. Women and students from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Expectations:

• Fellowship recipients are expected to keep the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) informed of their progress with monthly report surveys
• A final report survey is required and must be submitted in a timely manner following the completion of the fellowship
• The student awardee should participate in publication of any research results. WSGC must be informed of any publications resulting from our funding.
• The student should plan on giving a public presentation on their fellowship project. Participation in professional scientific meetings are strongly encouraged
• Students must participate in a minimum of 5 hours of public science outreach activities during the fellowship year. This can include activities like: Science Fair judging, Women in STEM volunteering, Science Kitchen outreach activities, High-Altitude Balloon Program outreach activities, mentoring students, helping with summer science camps, etc.

Qualifications:

• Students must be enrolled and in good standing at the University of Wyoming
• Students must be part of a Master’s or Ph.D. program
• Faculty supervisors must have active status and/or plan to be on-site and readily available to the students
• Students must be U.S. citizens

Award Criteria:

• Research must be of a nationally competitive nature and have scientific merit
• Proposals must be well written and aimed at a general audience
• Potential for the recipient to develop a successful research program, resulting refereed publications, is desired
• Proposals that cannot be fully funded from other sources are given priority
• Proposals which include non-federal matching funds that can be documented are given priority
• Consideration will be given to the strength of the advisor’s recommendation
• Proposals must have goals that are aligned with NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program objectives and the strategic missions of one or more of NASA’s Mission Directorates:

  • NASA Strategic Plan 2022
  • Science Mission Directorate
  • Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate
  • Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate
  • Space Operations Mission Directorate
  • Space Technology Mission Directorate
  • NASA’s Research Priorities for NASA Mission Directorates and Centers
  • NASA STEM Engagement

(Previous proposals were allowed 5 pages for the body of the proposal, the current requirement is a maximum of 3 pages. Cost share is also now required. All other requirements are the same.)
