Data Science Intern, Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc.

Laramie, WY

Position Title: Data Science Intern

Organization: Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc.

Location: Laramie, WY

Organization Overview: Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. is a dynamic, medium sized consulting firm with offices across the United States.

Position Overview: Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST) is seeking a candidate for a paid internship in ecological data science. This internship program is co-funded by the University of Wyoming EPSCoR Program and WEST. The goal is to increase the intern’s competitiveness for computational and data science careers in academic, government, and/or commercial settings. The internship can begin as soon as possible or this spring. Current undergraduate or graduate students with adequate availability are encouraged to apply to conduct internship activities during the 2023 spring semester.

WEST specifically seeks an intern to work on a collaborative project with WEST and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The project is focused on mapping the current and future distribution of Culex tarsalis, the mosquito vector for West Nile Virus in Wyoming. The intern will use publicly available data on C.tarsalis temperature tolerance to map the species’ potential current range and future range under different climate scenarios. These range maps will be intersected with maps of Greater sage-grouse habitat to provide a coarse assessment of West Nile Virus risk to sage-grouse. Thus, WEST is particularly interested in candidates with some experience or education in geospatial analyses using a GIS. The intern will be supervised and mentored by a WEST Data Scientist, with the opportunity to interact and work with multiple WEST staff, in addition to scientists with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Qualifications: Because this position is funded in-part by a grant through the University of Wyoming, applicants must be current students or recent graduates (within the past 3 years) of the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college.
