Position Title: Recreation Interns – Two Paid Internships

Organization: Sheridan Community Land Trust

Location: Sheridan, WY

Position Overview: Currently looking for two Recreation Interns to works with the Recreation Program Manager and the Executive Director as part of the Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) team to lead the community trail volunteer program and help build and maintain community trails in Sheridan County, Wyoming.

This internship will develop the following knowledge and skills:

  • Management of community trails
  • Construction of non-motorized trails
  • Volunteer management
  • Communicating with different audiences
  • Project management

Duties:

Construction and maintenance of new community trail – 50%

  • Conduct projects such as mowing and weed eating, trail reshaping, management of weeds, and cleanup of debris
  • Building and shaping new trail surface with the use of hand tools
  • Involves often strenuous labor using and transporting over distance hand tools, equipment (trimmer, weed sprayer, chainsaw) and/or supplies in wheelbarrows (lumber, gravel, etc.)

Managing community trail volunteers – 35%

  • With the help of the Recreation Program Manager coordinate volunteer groups including planning ahead for the group and their needs; as well as, leading the group during their volunteer time
  • Develop and promote volunteer opportunities that individuals can complete outside of set volunteer events
  • Communicate with volunteer through email and phone

Helping the SCLT Team and Professional Development– 15%

  • Job shadow with other roles at SCLT including conservation, history and community programming
  • Assist with other conservation work including wildlife friendly fencing and wetland restoration projects
  • Participates in organizational development, community outreach and fundraising activities

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • This is primarily an outdoors position. You will be traveling uneven terrain, performing work which often requires heavy lifting, digging, and carrying.

Salary/Benefits: This is a temporary, full time (40 hours / week) internship starting May 1st and ending October 13th. Start and end dates are negotiable with a fixed term length of 960 hours. Compensation will be at an hourly rate of $16.00.

Qualifications:

  • Prior knowledge and/or experience trail maintenance and construction
  • Familiarity with hand tool care and maintenance
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • Ability to navigate using maps and/or GPS, walk in rough, rural and wide-open terrain, and be willing to work outdoors in all weather

Start/End Dates: May 1 – October 13

Salary/Pay: $16.00 / hour
